Join us on Wednesday, March 19, from 4–7 p.m. at Maryville Retreat Center for a heartfelt celebration of the St. Joseph Table. This cherished tradition honors St. Joseph—the patron saint of workers, families, and the Church—blending faith, community, and charity.
The History of the St. Joseph Table
The tradition of the St. Joseph Table dates back to medieval Sicily, where a terrible drought threatened the people with starvation. In their desperation, the people prayed to St. Joseph for help, and their prayers were answered with rain. Grateful for his intercession, they created a table overflowing with food, sharing their abundance with the poor.
Over time, this tradition spread beyond Sicily to other regions and countries, becoming a yearly celebration. The St. Joseph Table is a symbol of gratitude, generosity, and faith. It is traditionally filled with an abundance of foods—such as ornate bread creations and pastries—that represent the blessings received and the hope St. Joseph inspires.
A Tradition of Giving
At the heart of the St. Joseph Table is the spirit of giving. Every year, food is set aside to be shared with those in need, ensuring that no one is turned away from the table. It’s a beautiful opportunity to come together as a community, celebrate our blessings, and serve those less fortunate.
We invite you to celebrate this tradition with us at Maryville Retreat Center, where faith, community, and charity come together to honor St. Joseph.
