It is hard to believe how quickly time passes. We were just celebrating the Christmas season and Lent is already fast approaching. With this in mind, it does not seem too early to begin preparing now rather than scrambling when Ash Wednesday arrives in February. I find that I often do not allow myself enough time to truly reflect on what would be meaningful Lenten sacrifices, instead defaulting to something impulsive or repeating past ways of “offering it up for Lent.”
Coming to Maryville Retreat Center for a day—or even a few days—to discern your personal path leading into Lent may be the perfect opportunity to engage in quiet reflection. Choosing a private retreat can deepen your prayer and provide space for meaningful conversation with God, helping you prepare for the Lenten season with a greater sense of spiritual readiness.
Some questions you might use for discernment and reflection include:
• When people look at me, do they see a reflection of God?
• Do I stand up for my Catholic beliefs?
• Do I look for the best in others?
• Have I become complacent in my faith?
• What daily routine can help me deepen my prayer life?
Even if a visit to Maryville before Lent is not part of your plans, taking just a few minutes each day to pray the Rosary or read Scripture can help place your heart in the right space as you prepare for the Lenten season.
Lent is rooted in prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Some ideas to consider in each of these areas include:
• Committing to a new or deeper form of prayer throughout your day.
• In addition to giving up a favorite treat, identifying a distraction that may be negatively affecting your spiritual life.
• Choosing a way to serve your community or support a charitable organization. Deo Gratias Ministries in Detroit, one of our Felician ministries, is always grateful for both donations and volunteer support.
As Lent approaches and we begin this sacred journey, let us be intentional in focusing on God in ways that strengthen us spiritually and draw us closer to Him each day.
Best wishes,
Nick Osantoski, Director
