Listening Beneath the Noise

“Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.”
—I Kings 19:11-12

God comes to us in both expected and unexpected ways and places—church, dreams, music, a word or text, mountains, sunrises and sunsets, a bird or insect, newborn babies, stillness… We sense God’s presence and often have no words for it. And if we do, we may not know who to share it with, for fear of what others might think.

When I began religious life as a Felician Sister, I was introduced to spiritual direction. Over the years, my spiritual directors have been a valuable gift. They provided space to share my experiences and images of God. In moments that brought joy, anger, doubt, sadness or grief, my directors helped me find God by asking questions that allowed me to savor those experiences and go deeper.

For me, spiritual direction becomes essential when making important life decisions—regarding ministry, vocation, major transitions or difficult situations. It is especially crucial when prayer feels difficult or when I feel disconnected from God. Having someone who truly listens and helps me through the process deepens my assurance that I am following God’s will.

The frequency of direction varies according to individual need. Typically, a person meets with a trained spiritual director once a month for about an hour. I recommend committing to at least three sessions before discerning whether the relationship is a good fit—both for the one seeking direction and the one giving it.

Now, as a spiritual director myself, I feel a deep sense of awe and wonder as I accompany someone serious about their spiritual journey and relationship with God. It is truly holy ground.
