Winter Reflection

by | Jan 15, 2026

As I sat gazing out the windows at Maryville Retreat Center recently, I could not help but be deeply touched by the beauty and wonder of Lake Elliott. I had never noticed before how the waters respond and adapt to the varied weather conditions of the winter season. In frigid temperatures, the lake freezes and becomes solid, layered with several inches of sparkling ice.

When wind and snow arrive, the ice turns into an artistic canvas—etched with swirling patterns and endless, ingenious scenes that reveal our Creator’s genius. As the thermometer rises and the ice begins to melt, several underwater springs make their presence known—yet another surprising work of art from our God.

I am also amazed by how the abundant fish in our lake remain warm and healthy beneath the winter waters. They, too, are lovingly cared for, no matter what the weather brings.

These images of Lake Elliott invite us to pause and reflect on how the renewal of our spirit is ever-changing and ongoing. In the cold and frigid times of our lives, God forms a thick platform of His love beneath us—strong enough to walk on, or even to skate upon. He walks beside us and holds us steady so that we do not “fall through the ice.” God is also present during the winter thaw, reminding us that His springs of never-ending grace and love can rise up in our lives in unexpected and surprising ways.

As the winter season continues to unfold with snow, ice, sleet, wind and rain, let us walk together with God, discerning His direction and purpose for each of us in His own unique way. Walk with Him, knowing deeply and surely that God will firmly, yet gently, lead us into spring—new growth, new life, new surprises and new blessings.

Until then, happy ice skating!
