When people talk about spiritual disciplines—those practices that help us grow in faith and strengthen our relationship with God—we often think of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. These are beautiful, time-honored practices that shape our hearts and deepen our spiritual lives.
But there are many other disciplines that can nurture the soul: Bible study, fellowship, service, worship and solitude to name a few. One discipline especially dear to my heart is spiritual reading.
Simply put, spiritual reading is the practice of reading to grow in holiness. It invites us to slow down, reflect and allow God’s Spirit to speak through the written word. What that reading looks like varies from person to person—books, magazines, websites—whatever format draws you closer to God.
Here at Maryville Retreat Center, we’ve created a library designed to help guests experience this discipline in a peaceful, welcoming environment. The shelves are filled with books on prayer, the spiritual life, Franciscanism, and guides for personal retreat. You’ll find everything from the timeless wisdom of the saints to beloved 20th-century writers like Thomas Merton and Henri Nouwen, as well as contemporary authors such as Joyce Rupp and Philip Yancey.
Guests are encouraged to browse, borrow and read wherever they feel most comfortable on campus—perhaps in a cozy corner, under a shade tree or by the window with a warm drink in hand.
So next time you visit Maryville, take a few quiet moments to explore our library. You may find that a good book can become a beautiful companion on your spiritual journey.
We invite you to plan your visit to Maryville Retreat Center in Holly, Michigan—a place of peace, prayer and renewal. Whether you come for a weekend retreat, a day of reflection or simply some time for yourself, you’ll find space here to read, rest and reconnect with God.
