As we move from the cold and sometimes challenging weather of winter through this time of transition into spring, we can’t help but notice, here at Maryville Retreat Center, the ongoing creativity of God in creation.
During the cold of winter, the endless imagination of the Divine is revealed in the uniqueness of each snowflake—a testament to God’s artistic giftedness. How a snowflake forms is indeed a phenomenon. Snowflakes are actually ice crystals that fall from the sky as snow. These individual crystals form in our atmosphere, each one singular in shape and size.
Snowflakes are also a symbol of intention. A Zen proverb states, “A snowflake never falls in the wrong place,” meaning that nothing happens without reason. Some people and faith traditions believe that the snowflake symbolizes the purposeful order and uniqueness of all things.
Every snowflake falls, not by chance, but according to God’s plan. This is yet another way God expresses His design and purpose—not only in creation but in the divine path He has destined for each one of us from the beginning of time. Follow the divine pathway of your soul. Spend some time at Maryville in soul-seeking and listening.
As we move from winter into spring, the lily of the valley begins to bloom as the weather warms. Hidden, small, quiet and surprising, this delicate flower symbolizes purity, joy, sincerity, love and happiness. Its pure whiteness is refreshing. Though delicate, it is also strong—and has long been a symbol of humility.
In our Christian tradition, this singular springtime bloom symbolizes rebirth, new beginnings, and a renewal of life and spirit. At Maryville, our guests often encounter the lily of the valley on their outdoor walks—one of God’s special springtime gifts to us!
