Let It Rain: Finding Grace in the Storm at Maryville

by | Jun 10, 2025

There’s something sacred about the sound of rain.

At Maryville Retreat Center, rainy days are not an interruption — they’re an invitation. When clouds gather over Lake Elliott and gentle drops begin to fall on the chapel roof, the entire retreat center seems to exhale. The rain slows everything down. It hushes the world and softens the soul.

For many guests, rainy days here become unexpected blessings. You might find yourself curled up with a journal in the library while sipping tea. Or watching the mist roll in across the lake while sitting in a rocking chair. Or walking beneath the trees with an umbrella in hand, hearing the rhythm of water tapping leaves like a whispered lullaby.

In Scripture, rain is often a symbol of renewal — a sign of blessing, healing and growth. “He will come to us like the rain, like the spring rains that water the earth” (Hosea 6:3). At Maryville, we witness that truth. Sometimes it’s in a tear shed in prayer, a long-overdue conversation with God or a breakthrough that comes only when we slow down long enough to listen.

Rain doesn’t ruin the retreat experience — it deepens it. It draws us inward. It reminds us that growth often comes in the gray. So next time you come to Maryville and the skies open up, don’t rush inside. Pause. Watch. Listen. Let the rain fall — and know that grace is falling with it.
